Commonwealth Bank of Australia
See yourself in our team:
The Business Banking Legal team provides high value, strategic legal assistance to the CBA’s corporate transactional banking and payments businesses.
The Business Banking Legal team is part of CommBank’s Customer Services Legal team and benefits from a strong legal support base, knowledge resources and a wealth of expertise from this large in-house division of the Bank.
Do work that matters:
We are looking for a lawyer with strong commercial legal skills who is interested in or has experience with payments or platforms and networks and who can effectively contribute at senior levels.
You will provide strategic, practical legal advice and have high level analytical and critical legal decision-making capabilities to assist CBA in attaining strategic goals in a safe and customer-focussed way.
We are a team of highly skilled lawyers supporting a range of different products and stakeholders with humour and humility.
Collaboration is key to our team’s success and we are looking for a commercially-focussed lawyer who is open to cultivating skills to assist in the variety of matters we support.
The work is varied and may include assisting with:
- new product and service innovation and enhancements, including ‘as-a-service’ offerings through APIs
- contractual negotiations with referrers, intermediaries, brokers, service providers, agents or other entities within the payments ecosystem
- advising in relation to scams, customer complaints and remediation
- general banking and financial services advice and project or product migration work
- terms for standard form or bespoke (for large institutional clients) customer contracts
- regulatory matters including breach advices and responses to regulator requests, and regulatory change (including due to industry or scheme mandate)
- identifying opportunities to simplify relevant frameworks, policies and processes to optimise effectiveness and efficiency
We’re interested in hearing from people who have:
- Tertiary qualifications in law and 5+ years* relevant post admission / qualification experience (PAE)
- Ideally at least 4 years’ experience in private practice
- Excellent technical legal skills including the ability to quickly grasp, negotiate and resolve issues in complex matters and a willingness to continue to grow and expand your expertise
- The ability to draft, negotiate, and drive to completion complex commercial agreements that achieve business objectives, and continue to support those business relationships once consummated
- The capacity to build excellent relationships with a range of stakeholders and the ability to clearly communicate complex issues
- A team-oriented outlook, a sense of humour, unquestioned ethics and integrity, sound judgment and humility
- An interest in learning about new practice areas and products rather than focusing on a particular area of law
- Experience or interest in payments, platforms and networks or financial services regulation
- We are interested in the right mindset and aptitude. Most of our team are 10+ PAE and we encourage more senior practitioners to apply. Title and remuneration subject to experience and skills of the successful candidate.
